The New Tutankhamen?

The trinket makers have a new souvenir for tourists. It appears to be a plaque with a low quality copy of the mask of King Tut at the top, some hieroglyphics at the bottom, and a message, in English, written across the center.

Obama, New Tutankhamen of the World.

(Of course, they leave off the comma. This is Egypt, you know, and trinket makers are not scholars.)

Well, is that all he is? Is Obama really like Pharaoh Tutankhamen? For goodness’ sake, why would he want to be? The fabled Pharaoh left this earth in his late teenage years, having accomplished little of note besides leaving pretty tomb goods that managed to escape plundering for a few thousand years.

But really, what did King Tut do of note? Not a whole lot.

Now, if the tourist trinkets said something like the following:

Obama, New Ramses the Great of the World.

...I would indeed be concerned, because this Pharaoh was a ruler in every sense of the word. Not a piker like young King Tut.

I’m OK with the King Tut reference. Let’s keep it that way. Maybe the trinket makers know something we don’t.
