There is standing 1996 law that requires states and localities to cooperate with Federal authorities in the enforcement of immigration laws, and yet a spokesbot for U.S. AG Eric Holder stated yesterday that the Obama administration will not take legal action against openly declared sanctuary cities, making a ridiculous distinction between cities that make no effort to enforce Federal laws, and states (such as AZ) that “interfere” with Federal enforcement of immigration laws, by -well- helping to enforcing them. It is the most tendentious and intentionally distorted reading of standing law we’re aware of, and signals that not even logical consistency is a barrier to an outright ideological stance against enforcing current immigration law, and is an obvious signal to the Chicano/Mestizo voting block that this Administration is in their corner.
