I find it interesting she defines the site as a “once-sacred temple.” Perhaps any place she goes is “once-sacred.”

Dude, the hairstyles?

Get real.

Laurel,

The press spent a lot of time ridiculing these ladies for their manner of dress, hairstyle, and for the “bizarre” custom keeping hope chests.

I don’t have a problem with the FLDS ladies putting their hair up in styles that seem attractive to them; I have an issue with Oprah making them seem like quaint curiosities for doing so.

Laurel,

You are very right and given the type bodily mutilation one see these days making fun of these women for having long hair and wearing long dresses seems rather ridiculous.

White woman strip searched and abused by police?

It’s tough to know what to make of this. Was she feeling suicidal or on drugs? They seem to have viewed her as a threat to herself. The people involved in the video don’t appear to have any malicious intent, and this type of thing would not be done for no reason. There was some reason, even if immoral. This type of thing doesn’t happen simply by mysterious “forces of evil”. Evil might be the cause, but it’s surely more understandable than what is being presented.

Anyway:

CANTON—Hope Steffey’s night began with a call to police for help. It ended with her face down, completely naked and sobbing on a jail cell floor.

Steffey says Stark County sheriff’s deputies used excessive force and assaulted her during a strip search 15 months ago, according to a federal lawsuit.

Stark County Sheriff Timothy Swanson denies the allegation.

Steffey’s attorney says her clothes, including her underwear and bra, were stripped from her body by at least seven male and female sheriff’s deputies and jail workers. She lay face down in handcuffs at the time.

“Hope begged and pleaded with her ... assailants to stop,” the lawsuit says. “There was no forcible penetration but Hope felt as if she was being raped.”

The sheriff denies this was a strip search.

The sheriff’s policy requires officers conducting any strip search to be of the same sex.

Her attorney, David Malik, said Steffey, 41, was never asked to voluntarily remove her clothes. In an e-mail, Swanson said Steffey was asked to remove her clothes but refused. He said deputies took them off for her own safety.

Swanson declined to comment further, saying the details would come out in court.

Channel 3 News obtained exclusive video of Steffey’s night in the Stark County jail cell. You can click the link at the bottom of the page to view it. A warning: it is difficult to watch.

Steffey declined to be interviewed for this story. But her husband, a high school educator, talked to Channel 3’s Tom Meyer.

Greg Steffey said his wife is still traumatized. But the couple wants the story told to prevent it from happening to someone else.

“This could be your wife or anyone’s wife,” Greg Steffey said.

He said he still can’t believe this happened to Hope, a 125-pound woman who, earlier that night, turned to police for help.

“You don’t treat people like this,” Greg Steffey said. “I don’t think murderers are treated like this much less people charged with disorderly conduct.”

Steffey’s ordeal with the Stark County Sheriff’s deputies began after her cousin called police for help.

In a 9-1-1 call, her cousin said Steffey had been assaulted by another cousin.

When a Stark County deputy arrived, he asked for Steffey’s driver’s license. She accidentally turned over her dead sister’s license, which she said she keeps in her wallet as a memento, the lawsuit says.

The deputy refused to give the license back and told Steffey to “shut up about your dead sister,” according to her attorney.

The sheriff denied that in a written response to the lawsuit.

Eventually, Steffey was arrested and taken to the Stark County Jail. She was later charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

After her clothes were removed, she was locked in a cell. To stay warm, she wrapped herself in toilet paper. She remained in the cell for six hours.

During that time, she was not allowed to use a phone or seek medical attention for injuries she suffered that night, including a cracked tooth, bulging disc and bruises, the lawsuit says.

Video of the strip search found at the link. It is censored, so no nudity is revealed.

So, this could be a case of police abusing not only a citizen but a white woman citizen who was the original victim the call for help was made for.

However, I don’t think folks should exploit a political opportunity before knowing more information, as would Al Sharpton.

Not an overly intelligent place to keep this kind of memento, especially when in a stressful situation.

Still, this is outrageous treatment.

God bless,

Faust just posted this: How not to get arrested in Stark County Ohio

It was Stark County’s turn when on August 29, 2007 a lawsuit was filed by three teenage girls, ages 14, 15 and 16 who had agreed to take a 15-minute walkthrough of the Multi-County Juvenile Attention Center on May 18th, 2007 and perform 20 hours of community service. The agreement was in lieu of a court appearance for charges of trespassing during a fight that the girl’s lawyers claim at which they were only bystanders. Instead of the walkthrough the girls expected and the parents agreed to, the lawsuit claims guards at the center had the girls remove their clothes, squat, lift their breasts and open their mouths as part of the strip searches by a female guard while two male guards waited outside the room and made sexual remarks. As far as we know, the lawsuit is still pending and the surveillance tapes have never been found.

First aired on January 31st, 2008 onWKYC in Cleveland Ohio, the jail cell video showing Hope Steffey being forcibly stripped by both male and female deputies was extremely shocking, but the story behind the incident is more shocking still…

The only good intentions I can think of is this was an attempt to scare the girls straight. Or perhaps it was a misunderstanding regarding why they were sent there.

After failing to makes charges stick in two state he is convected in Texas:

Polygamist leader convicted of sexual assault - The Spokesman-Review

And the people of Texas sat by and let another Waco happen… really this was much worse than Waco.

And more from an article on Perry:

Rick Perry and Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) were targeting the FLDS and looking for an excuse to attack them. Hoaxer Rozita Swinton made a crank phone call, alleging one case of child abuse, on 3/29/08. By April 3, 2008, Rick Perry had ordered the entire FLDS community surrounded by police armed with automatic weapons, SWAT teams with snipers, helicopters and even an M113 armored personnel carrier.

It is worth repeating, that all of this criminal state persecution, was based on one crank phone call from a crazy lady in Colorado, Rozita Swinton, who was pretending to be a child abuse victim. So obviously, Perry and an out of control CPS were targeting the FLDS. Then they invaded this peaceful, religious home schooler community and ripped away 438 childen from dozens of families who had committed no crime at all.

Imagine a fascist, totalitarian government coming into your household or neighborhood and ripping away YOUR kids based on one crank, hoax phone call. That is exactly what happened to those FLDS families in 2008 and Rick Perry supported that move long after it was revealed that a crank phone call complaint from a crazy woman Rozita Swinton in Colorado was the basis for the invasion. And even if that ONE complaint had been legitimate, what kind of a totalitarian government would come in there and remove FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTY EIGHT children from dozens of families? Unacceptable.

As of now, 438 of the 438 children who were taken are back with their parents, which just shows how weak the CPS case was and proves that the real motive for this raid was governmental religious oppression. The FLDS had been watched and targeted by the government who was just looking for an excuse to move in and destroy their lives.

If you are a home schooler or a conservative Christian or you just believe in freedom and “live and let live” you should be extremely concerned at the state sponsored gross miscarriage of justice that happened to these FLDS families. Source

There are always more consequences to an action than there appear on the surface.

And I agree, once the door is kicked open, the Christians huddling on the other side protecting their children had better watch out for the storm troops on the other side.
