Yes, we are toast. But we can still make toast too.............

I’ve been going back and forth about the NAFTA high issue with a certain young person, who seems to have bought the line put forth in this article:

Rural areas safe from Trans-Texas Corridor
http://www.hcnonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19764949&BRD=1574&PAG=461&dept_id=635575&rfi=6

The department will study improving roads like U.S. Highway 59; though how the proposed Trans-Texas Corridor makes its way through the greater Houston area remains unclear.

They don’t deny the TTC at all. All they are arguing about is the mechanics of it.

“We are fortunate that most of the people in my district appear to be spared the wrath of TXDOT confiscating their land to build a toll road,” the Austin Republican said in a statement. “We still have work to do to make sure that people’s homes and land in the farthest reaches of my district, that have been in their families for generations, are not paved over.”

Again, no denial of the plan. Just mechanics.

Existing highway corridors will be used to build the Trans-Texas Corridor instead of construction in rural parts of north and west Houston, the Texas Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

Again, the mechanics of it, no questioning of the project’s legitimacy.

I do believe they should be asking if it really is wise to be constructing a highway/rail/etc. system whose main purpose is to bring in goods manufactured in other countries, when our own economy has been pretty well tanked by the addiction to foreign imports.

Sort of like giving a heroin addict a IV bag instead of a small needle and a syringe.

I am working very hard at purchasing local Southern, or American-made products, and buying imports only when no other option is available.

Well, I know this is off-topic for this thread. But I couldn’t resist the rant.

God bless,
Laurel

What of a waste of money…

14 million dollars and untold childrens tears

The cost of the April raid on a polygamist compound in West Texas is expected to top $14 million, about one-third of it in lawyers’ fees, according to a published analysis of state records…

More invoices for overtime, travel and professional services are expected to boost the final tab, the records indicate…

The Star-Telegram said the records it examined didn’t include bills submitted by private charity groups that helped the state, and invoices from state employees may still be submitted…

Obama’s Remarks to La Raza

The system isn’t working when 12 million people live in hiding, and hundreds of thousands cross our borders illegally each year; when companies hire undocumented immigrants instead of legal citizens to avoid paying overtime or to avoid a union; when communities are terrorized by ICE immigration raids - when nursing mothers are torn from their babies, when children come home from school to find their parents missing, when people are detained without access to legal counsel.

This is what Obama said to La Raza...I wonder what he would say to the poor mothers and fathers of the FLDS...oh, wait, I guess they’re White, and not a big enough voting block.

Sigh.

The FLDS folks were treated abysmally; where is Obama or McCain on that kind of abuse of government power?

I wonder if there is any info out there on whether all the children who were abducted were returned to their parents?

There was a large article, illustrated with nice color photos, in one of those semi-tabloid glossy magazines like US (ok, I was reading it in a dentist’s office...) about one of the monogamous couples and how happy they were to have their children back, and all the agony they had gone through. It was a completely sympathetic article, interestingly enough.

Laurel,

Yes, I am pretty sure all the children are back home, but their mothers still face lots of legal problems ahead.

State kidnaps children again…

Texas wants 8 kids from sect back in state care

By MICHELLE ROBERTS – 14 hours ago

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Texas child welfare authorities asked a judge on Tuesday to place eight children from a Texas polygamist sect’s ranch back into foster care, saying their mothers refuse to limit their contact with men accused of being involved in underage marriages.

Child Protective Services filed petitions asking Texas District Judge Barbara Walther to place the six girls and two boys belonging to four different mothers back in foster care.

The children, ranging in age from 5 to 17, will be allowed to remain with their mothers until a hearing scheduled for Sept. 25, said CPS spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner. None currently lives at the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado.

CPS filed petitions detailing alleged involvement in underage marriages by the children’s fathers or stepfathers, submitting sect marriage documents, notes from suspected underage brides, photos and journal entries from Warren Jeffs, the jailed leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.1

I guess these are some of the “legal problems” faced by the mothers…

The article doesn’t say if the men the moms won’t limit contact with for these particular kids happen to be their fathers…

This entire thing stinks to high heaven.

I would put money on this being a test run; pick out a easily vilified group and see how the public reacts, get them used to the idea, and then broaden it out.

I agree.

Well, “good news” from CPS in Texas.

Polygamist child custody case winds down in Texas

The custody case that swept 439 children from a polygamist sect’s western Texas ranch into foster care has largely evaporated, with state authorities dropping all but a few dozen cases against parents.

All but 37 children from the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado have been released from court oversight after Child Protective Services found they had not been abused or that their parents could protect them from the risk of future abuse. Only one girl has been returned to foster care.

“CPS has taken a lot of criticism for this operation since April, but we’ve been doing everything we can to work with these families to ensure positive outcomes,” he said. “If they’re safe to the point where court oversight is no longer necessary, that’s great news.”

I am not sure how to comment on this. I am very glad the families are, for the most part, back together. But it was estimated in a previous article that CPS would spend $14 million on this whole case. I don’t know how much was actually spent, but I am sure it was a pretty high dollar amount, and for what? To harrass the FLDS and expose the children temporarily to the world’s blandishments?

This whole thing was one of the more disturbing things I’ve watched unfold in recent years. First Waco, then this...at least these kids are still alive.

God bless,
Laurel

Laurel,

It is likely more than $14 million, what a waste. The states hates us, we need to remember that always. I feel sorry for that poor girl still in “foster care,” it is a bad place a teenage girl to be put. As I siad before:

“polygamy is not the best idea and no 14 year old girls should be playing and reading books not getting married. But 14 year old girls should be taught that fornication is normal by “sex educators,” or put on “pill,” and passed around and abused by young perverts either.(as goes on in public high schools)”

While I think His words show us that polygamy is a sinful error, He did not criminalize it.

This is illogical. Sin is the breachment of the law. So if it is sinful it is also criminal, if it is criminal it is also sinful (at least in regards to the Eternal).

I know that David and Solomon did not sin in having multiple wives, but both did sin in taking foreign ones. Your argument that women should not compete with one another is valid - but why then should they not love one another? Obviously this kind of thing wouldn’t be for all women and certainly not for all men. You also state that a man cannot care for multiple women and many children - but you also miss the mark because a man who has 4 wives does not wed them all at once and produce offspring at the same time with all. My point is that the great thing about children (which the past couple generations seems to not realize) is that they GROW UP. ANd if you raise them in discipline and according to the law then you will have a useful aid to your family - someone to work, someone to help provide and to share in the prosperity etc. etc. So you would end up having more helpers than helpless I think. And Paul writes that it is best for the average to just have one wife so this kind of thing can’t exist among all and I don’t even think it would be right to take another wife if your current one did not approve. Either way some women are open for that kind of thing and it would be silly to legislate morality above and beyond the law to them - especially when they provide cases such as this group who are like a racialist agrarian community who minds their own business.

My 2 cents anyhow.

Also I just want to say b/c i didn’t say it earlier that i have issues with the book of Mormon. The few books that aren’t included in most bibles that I consider to be inspired are at least in the books in our canon mentioned as valid inspired books of God (I refer to Jasher and Enoch [or 1 Enoch]).
-------------------
Also I just want to add that there is this book KD Rebel I read which talks about polygamy from a racial perspective - by David Lane. THe book is Wotanist or w/e - altho he doesn’t spend time making it anything more than an interesting part of the novel (which is short).
