The Nephilim: Book of Enoch

Both the first book of Enoch and the Book of the Giants were found at Qumran. The story in book of Enoch is shocking to say the least. It was in most Christan bibles for the first 500 years. And it quoted three times in the New Testament. It was part of the Old Church Slavonic Bible and is still part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church scripture.

Genesis Chapter 6

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. (Genesis 6:1) KJV

When men began to multiply on earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw how beautiful the daughters of man were, and so they took for their wives as many of them as they chose… At that time the Nephilim appeared on earth (as well as later), after the sons of God had intercourse with the daughters of man, who bore them sons. They were the heroes of old, the men of renown. (Genesis 6:1)

Isn’t that the emblem of the Order of the Dragon (Societas Draconistrarum) you are using as your avatar. I use Vlad Dracula, a member of such order, as my picture on my forum profile.

And Faust, you are going to explain the Society of the Dragon to those of us who are not familiar with it?

Thanks ever so much,
Laurel

Laurel,

The Order of the Dragon was medieval order of knights who fought to protect Europe from the Turks. The order’s charter stated the purpose of the order was to fight the enemies of Christianity.

I hope you don’t think this topic about the Nephilim is too odd, I have been fascinated by the Dead Sea Scrolls and other things found at Qumran for many years.

Frankly, Faust, I am still trying to make sense out of the Nephilim topic…and how it relates to our mission here.

But I don’t think it’s beyond the scope of the Research Forum, so will let it ride unless I get some input otherwise from Admins etc.

The Order of the Dragon sounds interesting. I will try to read more about it later.

God bles,
Laurel

Laurel,

As I said before I am interested in the Dead Sea Scrolls found at Qumran. I am not entirely sure what make of the Nephilim.  The issue of the Nephilim (giants) of Genesis 6:1 is something the church has mainly tried forget about. Book of Enoch tells the story of miscegenation by the “fallen angels” with daughters of men. The mongrel giants engage in all kinds of debauchery and try to destroy mankind. Enoch, is father of Methuselah, the great-grandfather of Noah; Enoch protected and preserved his family from harm. Noah built the Ark and most of giants were destroyed in the great flood.

At the very least, it is a good caution against miscegenation…

Will have to read The Book of Enoch sometime…

God bless,

7Q5: Was Qumran a Christian Community?

Only the “First” Book of Enoch is the real thing.  The others are independent works based on it.  But yes, the earliest church fathers, such as Justin the Martyr and Tertullian explicitly say that it was always part of the Old Testament (Esther replaced it).  They also say why the book was removed:  it clearly prophesies the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Babylonians calling themselves “Jews” would not tolerate that.

Whether people here regard it as formerly canonical or as simply a worthy pseudepigraphal work, it is one we should all study.  It answers the question of why God had to wipe out the earth:  besides that men did only evil continually, the earth was flooded with interracial hybrid monsters that had to be destroyed.

(By the way the versions of “First” Enoch include parts of other books that do not belong, such as a weird Book of Moses and the meaningless Book of Luminaries.)
