Among other things, the CPSIA bans lead and phthalates in toys, mandates third-party testing and certification for all toys and requires toy makers to permanently label each toy with a date and batch number… For small American, Canadian, and European toymakers and manufacturers of children’s products, however, the costs of mandatory testing will likely drive them out of business.

KINGSTON, ON, November 19, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Queens University in Kingston, ON is coming under criticism for hiring six “dialogue facilitators” to roam its campus and intervene in student conversations in order to promote “diversity” and deal with what they deem to be any “offensive” material.

The six graduate students from diverse backgrounds have been hired to encourage discussion on race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and other social issues, as well as step-in when they hear conversations that could be deemed “offensive.” Each facilitator went through an 11-day training course to prepare them for their roles and have been granted free room and board as well as a yearly stipend as payment.

Critics of the program are questioning what constitutes offensive language, and are worried this initiative will be a step towards effectively squashing free speech rights on the Canadian university.

Social conservatives in Canada have in the last several years expressed increasing alarm at escalating efforts to silence “offensive” speech – efforts that, in practice, have led primarily to the targeting of those with politically incorrect views, particularly Christians with traditional views on sexual morality…

ENUGU, Nigeria (AFP) — Neighbors were suspicious of the daytime silence at the maternity clinic that came to life only after nightfall, though never suspected its disquieting secret—it was breeding babies for sale. But recent police raids have revealed an alleged network of such clinics, dubbed baby “farms” or “factories” in the local press, forcing a new look at the scope of people trafficking in Nigeria. At the hospital in Enugu, a large city in Nigeria’s southeast, 20 teenage girls were rescued in May in a police swoop on what was believed to be one of the largest infant trafficking rings in the west African country…

In 2005, a Lagos-based orphanage suspected of ties to child trafficking rings, was shut down. There, charred baby-bones were discovered on the rubbish tip, leading to suspicion the orphanage was involved in the peddling of human body parts, possibly for use in rituals or for organ harvesting. In other cases observers say babies are purchased to be raised for child labour and sexual abuse or prostitution…

I just don’t have an answer.” McCuin remains in the Smith County jail on capital murder charges and a $2 million bond.

Lindale, Georgia is a community that suffered economically as a result of NAFTA. The cotton mill in town shut down leaving the community without an economic base and turning it into a bedroom community for surrounding areas. To some extent, the people there have used an exceptional football team as a central element that maintains a sense of community.

Why Tom Friedman thinks “Globalization” is good for America…

Tom Friedman: “Globalization” good because it makes Americans poor and dependent on government.

What do you call it when multinational corporations scan the world for cheap labor, find poor people in developing nations, and pay them a fraction of America’s minimum wage? A common answer on the left is “exploitation.” For Thomas Friedman the answer is “collaboration”—or “empowering individuals in the developing world as never before.” Friedman has written another destined-to-be-a-best-seller, destined-to-annoy-many-leftists-even-though-he’s-a-liberal book, The World Is Flat…

Even globalization’s downsides—such as displaced American workers—can have an upside for liberals in political terms. A churning workforce strengthens the case for the kind of safety net that Democrats champion and Republicans resist. (Globalization-induced jitters may help explain why President Bush’s plan to make Social Security less secure hasn’t captured the nation’s imagination.) Friedman outlines an agenda of “compassionate flatism” that includes portable, subsidized health care, wage insurance, and subsidies for college and vocational school. You can argue about the details, and you can push them to the left. (He notes that corporations like to put offices and factories in countries with universal health care.) But this is clearly a Democratic agenda, and, as more and more white-collar jobs move abroad, its appeal to traditionally Republican voters should grow…1

I am rapidly finding out that the term Kool-Aid drinkers may actually be literally as well as figuratively an appropriate one for them. My own studies show that Barack Obama (particularly his acceptance speach at the DNC) has “godhood” delusions shockingly similar to those of the late so called “reverend” Jim Jones of the defunct “People’s Temple” whose mass murder suicide pact based cult was souly responsible for the Kool-Aid drinker term applied to extremely sheeplish sychophants of political candidates and celebraties.

Take as a forinstance the affore mentioned DNC acceptance speach. Rather than doing it in typical political convention style in the stadium where the convention was held with the typical balloon and confetti drop party Obama insisted that it be held before a large sychophant audiance in a football stadium in what for all the world looked like the “holy of holies” of a PAGAN TEMPLE. Not only that but he also would not appear in this “temple” in a normal walking manner. Rather he chose to come up from under the floor on a platform elevator so as to put in a “GODLIKE” appearance. In my opinion this desplay shows a Jim Jones “godhood” delusion on a much grander and even more DANGEROUS scale than even Jim Jones himself and Jones is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people. I would hate to think of the kind of carnage someone with an even WORSE “godhood” delusion than Jim Jones’s could do with the Presidency over the most poperful military and police agencies in the world today…1

I found the fact they found it necessary to disparage “Caucasians” interesting;” “Caucasians” like it so it must be “bad?” Yes the word “progressive” is a red flag to me too. Is Timothy Taylor white, why is he disparaging “Caucasian females over the age of 50?” Will they close the libraries and art museums next because “Caucasian females over 50” like them too?

I still don’t quite understand why they are destroying Duke Gardens. The Eco Freaks don’t like the display gardens because of the energy needed to heat them in the winter. It likely does take a lot of oil or gas to heat them. The directory of the garden, Timothy Taylor, is a real estate developer with no horticultural expertise. We may never now what is going on or why they destroyed the gardens.

Created by Doris Duke herself, they were larger than the New York Botanical Garden’s Haupt Conservatory, and were open to the public from 1964 until they were closed by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation as of May 25th, 2008. All plants, trees and shrubs will be removed. 1

Last week, two friends and I took a tour of the huge glass indoor gardens at Duke Farms, the 2,740-acre country estate here that was once the home of Doris Duke and is now maintained by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. This magnificent glass building (actually, one long conservatory and five attached glass houses) is about 60,000 square feet (one of the largest glass houses in America and bigger even than the New York Botanical Garden’s Enid Haupt Conservatory). It was designed by Horace Trumbauer for Ms. Duke’s father, and construction was begun in 1909 and completed by 1917.

Duke Farms, whose display gardens opened in 1964, will be transformed into an ecological environment learning center…

...the lovers of those display gardens (whom Mr. Taylor categorizes as being “primarily Caucasian females over the age of 50”). Petra Ross MacDonald, a biologist from Pennington, N.J., has organized a Web site, savedukegardens.org, to rally support for keeping the indoor display gardens. Ruth Schrey, a resident of Branchburg Township, collected 1,000 signatures within 14 days for a petition that was sent last week to all the trustees, and an application to apply for historic landmark status is in the works…

One has to hope that with a little more imagination and a little more sensitivity to the fact that Ms. Duke’s display gardens are quite irreplaceable, their destruction might still be avoided. As my friends and I concluded our tour, we were first saddened and then angry to think that the owners of this unique cultural landmark were so ready to jettison it. Soon, all the trees too large to move, such as the huge allée in the Italian garden, most of them 30 feet high, will be chopped down. Instructions have already been issued to dismantle the 50-year-old “figbar” hedge. Those plants that can be moved will be deaccessioned, the others left to die. But those of us who do care about this country’s increasingly meager heritage need not fret, Mr. Taylor assures me. He has been collecting video footage of the indoor gardens so that a historical record of the gardens will always exist. 1

Doris Duke’s own horticultural legacy, Duke Gardens, was the center of a controversy over its removal on May 25th, 2008. Miss Duke developed these exotic display gardens in honor of her beloved father James Buchanan Duke. She extended new greenhouses from the Horace Trumbauer conservatory at her home in Duke Farms, New Jersey. Each of the eleven interconnected gardens was a full-scale re-creation of a garden theme, country or period, inspired by DuPont’s Longwood Gardens. Miss Duke, who spoke nine languages, designed the architectural, artistic and botanical elements of the displays based on observations from her extensive international travels . She also labored on their installation, sometimes working 16 hour days. Display construction began in 1958; a rediscovered image of the stunning nightlighting of the French Gardens in the 1970s is an example of the attention to detail that Doris Duke continued to lavish on the Gardens throughout her life. 1
